Coastal Kings FC Fall on the Road to Gastonia FC Amid Challenging Conditions
The Coastal Kings FC made the long trip north, pushing past Charlotte for a five-hour journey to face Gastonia FC, but the day proved to be a difficult one both on and off the pitch.
From the opening whistle, the setting itself raised concerns. The match was played on a small, non-premium field that fell short of typical league expectations. Lines were faint and inconsistent, goals did not meet standard sizing, and the absence of proper medical staff added another layer of concern. Even basic match operations appeared strained, with a shortage of game balls, a detail that may seem minor but reflects broader organizational shortcomings.
Despite the subpar environment, credit must be given to Gastonia FC. The hosts executed their game plan, capitalized on opportunities, and ultimately earned the result. Their performance on the field cannot be diminished, even as questions linger about the overall management of the matchday experience.
For the Kings, however, the story was one of missed rhythm and self-inflicted setbacks.

Post-Match Interview – Head Coach David Koebler
Question: Coach, this wasn’t your best showing. Can you walk us through your thoughts on the game?
Koebler:
“Yeah, it wasn’t our day. We couldn’t find a rhythm. We had dozens of self-inflicted mistakes throughout the whole game, missed connections, missed communications, and missed opportunities. Gastonia didn’t so much beat us today, we beat ourselves. All they had to do was sit back, wait for our mistakes, and capitalize. Which is what they did.”
---
Question: You had a different group of players compared to your last match against Combine Academy. Was that by design?
Koebler:
“No, not by design. The UPSL has traditionally been a regional league, teams typically travel within an hour or so. In Savannah, we don’t have that luxury. We are so far removed from most of our opponents that we don’t travel less than two and a half hours, and today was five. We left at 10 in the morning and won’t be home until after midnight. That’s a 14-hour day. Many of our players have jobs, families, kids, responsibilities beyond playing for us. So week to week, it’s likely we’ll have different players representing us, just due to players not being able to carve eight or more hours out of their lives for away games. Home games are two, maybe three hours, and then you are back to work or time with the family. Last year, we didn’t have one starting lineup repeat. It’s not ideal, but it’s the reality.”

Question: Your last home opponent praised your hospitality and facilities. How would you assess your experience today?
Koebler:
“Maybe if they didn’t spend so much on the sideline DJ, they would have met minimum league standards.
In all seriousness, this is the fourth division of professional soccer in the United States. If you are going to invest in players, then give them the respect, give the league the respect, to at least meet the minimum standards. Not all organizations have access to facilities like we do, and we understand that, but what we saw today was disappointing.”
---
Question: What’s next for the Kings after today’s loss?
Koebler:
“What’s next is the same as if we had won. We get back to training this week and focus on improving. It’s a long season, and our goal is to finish in the top four and make the playoffs. The only way to do that is to get back to work and respond in the next match.”

Looking Ahead
After an early bye week, the Kings will once again head north to face SCU Heat in what has quickly become a competitive and heated rivalry.
Last season’s meetings between the two sides were tightly contested. SCU Heat claimed the first match by a single goal. The Kings returned the favor later in the season with a crucial win that kept their playoff hopes alive. However, the third meeting in the Mid-Atlantic semifinal belonged to Heat, who delivered a commanding, high-scoring performance to end the Kings’ postseason run.
With that history in mind, the upcoming fixture presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Earning points on the road will not come easy, but it would mark a significant response following this setback.
For Coastal Kings FC, the message is clear, regroup, refocus, and get back to work.
